scape the cold New York winter, let our artists take you on a journey and discover contemporary sounds from Athens, Beirut or Barcelona. After an amazing night on January 13, 2019 where five bands performed for a packed Drom, the MJF is back with its 4th edition. The festival continues to highlight a Mediterranean perspective on jazz and for the first time the festival will take place on two nights.

January 18th

Multi-instrumentalist Adam Maalouf will kick off the festival with a solo set presenting new material and compositions from his last album Path of Time. Adam who was born in the US to Lebanese descent, combines influences form the Middle East (and beyond) with electronica and live looping. Adam is also considered one of the most innovative and masterful players of the pantam, aka hang or handpan, the "flying saucer" instrument invented in the year 2000.

Los Angeles Handpan Workshop

This workshop will focus on learning compositions in Maalouf’s “10 Finger” style. Students learn how each finger may be used to conjure a wide range of tonal qualities and melodic patterns from the instrument. Compositions stem from a diverse rhythmic and musical vocabulary that takes students on a journey from the Middle East, India and beyond.

Adam Maalouf is a NYC-based multi-instrumentalist and composer. His cross-genre style of music forms a common thread between the cultures of the East and West. Maalouf’s playing style represents the cross-pollination of diverse influences, including western classical, Jazz, Arabic, and Indian classical music and electronica. Adam is currently performing music from his soon to be released electronic album “Path of Time". As a teacher, Adam has led workshops at the Asheville Percussion Festival, Hang Out(USA), Griasdi Festival(Austria) and regularly holds workshops though the Pantam Collective in his hometown of Brooklyn, NY.
